Our friends, the humpback whales, are getting ready to leave the cold waters of the great north and embark on an extraordinary journey. Some are already “on their way.”
Every year, thousands of them come to the warm and calm waters of the Caribbean, to mate or give birth. They come to the Bay of Samana, considered one of the best places in the world to observe them, from mid-January to late March.
Humpback whales are part of the great whale family. They measure around fifteen meters and weigh 40 tons on average.
Humpback whales are marine mammals, they breathe air and, for this reason, they regularly surface. They stay submerged for an average of twenty minutes, but they can remain underwater for up to forty minutes.
After the long journey they undertake, during which they do not feed, they spend part of the winter in our region, still not eating. As a result, they will lose a fifth of their body weight.
